Classification Selection of Rock Reamers Openers and Analysis of Cone Problems

Classification of rock reamer hole openers

Rock reamer hole openers can be divided into two categories based on their structure: roller cutters and toothed wheels.

Roller cutters are only suitable for soft and medium-hard rocks, and are not suitable for hard rocks. They are not convenient to reverse exit from. However, toothed wheels have high strength, good wear resistance, long service life, and good safety. They are suitable for drilling operations in various rock formations, especially for long-distance drilling through rock formations, and are also convenient for reverse exit. Therefore, we have chosen toothed wheel rock reamer hole openers as the object of development.

Selection points of rock reamer hole openers

Select rock reamer hole openers based on the type of formation being drilled. The type of formation being drilled is an important factor in correctly selecting the size and form of the rock reamer hole openers. When drilling in soft rock formations, larger diameter drilling rigs and fewer drilling operations are allowed. The size difference between adjacent two levels of drilling rigs can also be larger, with a difference of 100-200mm. When drilling in hard rock formations, the required diameter of the drilling rig should not vary too much, with a difference of 50-150mm, and multiple drilling operations should be used to achieve the best drilling efficiency and easy removal of drill cuttings.

Horizontal directional drilling is a high-risk industry, and accidents can occur at any time with a slight mistake. In order to meet the need to replace drilling rigs during a single drilling operation or to release a jammed drilling rig, the design of the rock drilling rig body should also consider the function of reverse exit drilling. The main purpose of drilling is to remove the drilling cuttings from the borehole, not just cut the drilling cuttings. Therefore, when selecting a drilling rig, we hope that the produced drilling cuttings are small enough to allow the mud to suspend the drilling cuttings and smoothly discharge them to the surface.

What should do if the back of the toothed wheel of the rock drilling rig is prone to wear?

The method we adopt is:

  • For existing rock reamer hole openers, use harder 508 welding rods to stack or insert alloys on the back of their toothed wheels to protect them from wear.

  • Choose large-sized toothed wheel pads as much as possible for large drilling rigs. The advantages of these pads are that they are wide and thick, and they are not easy to break.

  • Large-diameter drilling rigs can be equipped with stabilizers to prevent the drilling rigs from shaking in the borehole.

  • Increase the number of toothed wheels to reduce wear on each toothed wheel pad.
